Back To School Teens: Senior Doesn’t Mean Slacker

One of the best times for any teen in school is their senior year in high school. There is so much to look forward to such as: the Senior Prom, Senior Trip, Ring Day, and other occasions that precede graduation. However being a senior in high school doesn’t mean everything else is put aside.

The importance of a student’s senior year is not measured by activities surrounding their graduation, but how well they continue to maintain good averages, score high on tests and SATs, which will ultimately afford them the opportunity to choose from the top colleges. Today, getting into a good college is synonymous with earning more money. With a degree in technology, business, computer science or economics, one can command a salary of $100,000 or more.

Some seniors may take the attitude that the final year of high school is nothing more than good times and less studying and homework. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, it is because a student is a senior that more emphasis has to be placed on whether or not they have fulfilled all of the prerequisites to enter a good college. Have they signed up for extra-curricular activities such as tutoring, school newspaper, community organizations and volunteer work? Have they been seeking additional credit towards by taking advanced classes? Have they visited college campuses, obtained applications, and put together a resume which would wow college admission officers.
Have they thought about how to fill out college applications, come up with an essay that truly reflects who they are and what they want to achieve in life?

These are the things seniors in high school have to think about if they are to become successful. Working hard now to ensure they have a bright future ahead is more important than the next field trip. While being a senior in high school may encompass a lot of fun things and important events; it doesn’t equal the importance of having an outstanding educational background along with the focus, commitment, and drive to further their educational career.
