Celebrate The End Of Summer With A Labor Day Cookout

Everyone loves a good cookout and with fall quickly approaching, everyone enjoys one last official summer activity –the Labor Day cookout. It’s a great time to spend with family and friends and just relax. With some preparation the day before things can go smoothly with very little actual work to do once your guests arrive.

If you’re planning to grill something like steak or chicken, make it extra special by putting the meat in a zipper bag with some marinade. There are many varieties available in the store and all you need to do is add a little water and oil for a great tasting meat. Leave it in the refrigerator overnight so the flavor has time to soak in. Then, after the grill is ready, take it out, bag and all, place the pieces on the grill, pour a little out on each piece of meat and throw the rest of it away.

Burgers are also a favorite for a Labor Day cookout. If you have guests who are watching what they eat, you can provide some turkey or veggie burgers as alternatives.

A nice treat is grilled corn on the cob. If you can get it fresh, it’s even better. Clean it, place each ear on a piece of foil with a little butter, or vegetable oil, wrap it up and set it right on the grill. Turn it every few minutes. Unwrap them carefully; add salt to taste and you have an addition to the meal.
You can grill other vegetables as long as they are fairly firm. Some good grilled veggies are peppers, squash, onions and asparagus. The softer vegetables, like cucumbers, are better left for a raw vegetable tray. Slice the vegetables, coat them in a little vegetable oil or butter and grill them for about thirty minutes.

Keeping plenty of fresh fruits and veggies around too munch on while the food is cooking is not only tasty, but it keeps the guests happy until the main dish is done. It’s also healthier than other snacks. Wait to bring out the chips and dip until closer to time that the meat is done and people will eat less of them, as they have already been snacking on healthier things.

Desserts are always a favorite part of any meal, but things that are cool and light are the best bet for an end of summer cookout. Watermelon and other fresh fruit of course are the easiest. A fun and tasty treat is a chocolate filled angel food cake. Slice the top of the cake off, about an inch down, then hollow out the cake and fill with chocolate whipped cream (you can add a little cocoa to plain whipped cream), put a thin layer on to attach the top of the cake, then frost the rest of it with the whipped cream. It’s light, cool and a great way to top off a great summer cookout.
