Family Time: Have A Neighborhood Hay Ride

Hayrides are usually reserved for pumpkin patch tours at your local farms. Well, hold on to your scarecrow hat because now you can have your own neighborhood hayride and invite up to 25 of your neighbors.

The first thing to do is contact your local homeowner’s association or community center to find out where you can rent a wagon for the day. Try to book the event at least two months in advance. Check the local farms as well, since they rent out wagons too.

Whether you are new to the neighborhood or have lived there for years, this is a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors. A good idea may be to visit each home and give them a flyer detailing the upcoming event. In this way, you can gauge whether or not they would be interested. Make a list of those who are keen on going, and when the invitations are ready to be sent out, they could be hand delivered by your kids.

Next, your kids can make invitations to send to all your friends and neighbors. Deliver them about a week before your hayride. On the invitations there could be a “BYOL” at the bottom indicating bring your own lunch if you are doing an afternoon hayride.

If you are having the hayride in the fall, be sure to let everyone know to wear light layers and bring blankets, especially for the kids. An evening hayride is sure to be more fun and spooky for the kids. However, if you choose an afternoon hayride, look for a destination that is scenic and has some historical significance as well. You may also want to bring along a guide, if applicable. Most hayrides usually involve sing-a-longs; find out if a neighbor can play a guitar and ask him or her to bring it along.

It could be a themed hayride, or a “get to know your neighbor” hayride; whatever you feel is appropriate. Or, it could be a hayride to a historic site in your town.

We live in a diverse society. Yet, in some areas we hardly know our neighbors. We may greet them when we see them, but we never really take the opportunity toget to know them. This is true especially in suburban communities where homes are spread further apart. In rural communities, however, they have events like this all the time.

Perhaps there are some neighbors in your community who live alone and would love the opportunity to meet and spend time with their neighbors. Having a neighborhood hayride is the perfect event to bring your neighbors together in a fun-filled afternoon or evening. Doesn’t it sound wonderful? Think what a difference you can make in someone’s life and the fun your whole neighborhood will enjoy.
