Goal Ideas For Teenagers
The teen years are interesting, and at times trying. It's hard to see our kids growing up and becoming young men and women. But we're also proud of them and want the best for them in life.
Setting goals becomes especially important when children become teenagers. They are approaching a time in their lives that comes with many responsibilities and many decisions to make. Goals can keep them motivated and moving in the right direction.
Education Goals
The high school years are some of the most important years in school. Children learn the things they need to succeed in high school in elementary and junior high school, but it's the grades in high school that count when it comes to college options. Encouraging your teenager to set educational goals can help them succeed.
Some teens need to concentrate on bringing grades up in certain subjects. Others may have acceptable grades but want to qualify for honors and advanced placement programs. In order to set educational goals successfully, it is important that your teen be as specific as possible. "Doing better in school" is a nice thought, but it just doesn't cut it as a goal.
Teens often have their sights set on a certain college. If your teen has a specific school in mind, encourage her to find out what its admission requirements are and set goals to meet them. Doing so will provide her with lots of motivation.
Extracurricular Goals
Sports goals are common among teenagers. Most Valuable Player awards, All-State teams, and other athletic awards hold much prestige among the age group. These kinds of goals are healthy, but it is crucial to stress the importance of keeping up with schoolwork as well.
Band, debate teams, and other school-related activities may also inspire related goals. These types of awards as well as sports-related ones look good on college applications, and they are good for teens' self-esteem. So it is important to acknowledge and encourage goals pertaining to them.
Personal Goals
Personal goals become quite common when children become teens. These vary greatly from teenager to teenager. Some want to get in better physical shape, some want to learn new skills, and some want to do things to help others.
Discussing our teenagers' personal goals with them is an important part of parenting. We need to make sure the goals are good for them, and we may be able to offer advice on how to best achieve them. As long goals are healthy, supporting them can strengthen the bonds between parents and teens.
Encouraging our teenagers to set goals and follow through on them is one of the most beneficial gifts we can give them. The accomplishments they make during their high school years can set the stage for the rest of their lives. And goal setting is a skill that they can carry with them into adulthood.
