Should Your Preteen Have A Cell Phone?

Ah, the great debate continues. Should or shouldn’t you buy a cell phone for your preteen? Well, according to statistics and the avalanche of commercials on TV, every child should have a cell phone. In fact, the entire family should have cell phones. However, for this particular discussion, the question is: Should your preteen have a cell phone?

Recently in New York, the Department of Education mandated that no child can carry cell phones in the schools. This outraged parents to the point they had demonstrations to try and convince the department why their children should be able to have immediate contact with their parents. What do you think?

Let’s face it, cell phones, which were once used for emergency purposes only, are now replacing regular landlines. So what’s the answer? It depends on the parents. Only they can determine if a cell phone for their preteen is a luxury or a necessity.

Look at all of the uses of cell phones these days. It has become much more than a phone. Indeed, it has become a portable computer. Between text messaging and emailing, taking pictures and listening to music, it seems the entire concept of cell phones has dramatically changed.

Are all these peripherals necessary for a preteen? They would undoubtedly tell you yes, but the truth of the matter is a cell phone should only be used in an emergency, nothing more, and nothing less. Try giving your preteen that explanation and see how they respond to that statement.

If you are considering buying a cell phone for your preteen, there are family plans which are affordable and some wherein you can control the usage. The deals offered today can be cost-effective and you can determine the type of phone and the usage as well. If you prefer to refrain from all of the whistles and gadgets, you can do so.

Should your preteen have a cell phone? Honestly, it’s up to you. However, if you have a cell phone you may have to chew on these words, “Do as I say, not as I do.”
