Stress Management Is Crucial For Moms

The job of motherhood is not an easy one. One child can prove to be a handful, let alone several children. Stress is a part of a mom’s everyday life. In order to stay balanced, moms need to find ways to manage their stress levels. Here are some reasons why stress management is so important for mothers.

Motherhood is a full time job. When you work outside of the home, you have a time that you punch in and a time that you punch out. For moms, you punch in when the child is born and you never punch out. Even when they are grown, they are still your babies.

The most crucial time for moms is during the formative years. This includes every year of your child’s life until they reach the age of eighteen and leave the nest. Moms are constantly shaping the lives of their children with the example that they set.

High levels of stress can mar that example. Stress is the body’s response to external forces. Some of these forces are within our control and some are not. As a mom, distinguishing between the two can be the difference between bad stress and good stress.

When kids are young, they are needy. This is not a bad thing; it is just the way we humans were created. Until they can perform certain tasks on their own, children need the assistance of their parents around the clock. This is one of the external forces that are beyond our control.

Knowing that our children need our constant attention requires that moms develop ways to deal with the stress that comes with caring for a young baby. Mothers can get in over their heads quickly if they don’t plan for their day with the baby. While on maternity leave, things seem manageable without a set plan because you are home all of the time. When mom is tired, she can lay baby next to her and sleep. If baby is hungry, she can breastfeed or use a bottle and formula. If baby needs changing, she can reach for a diaper. Everything baby needs can be within reach of the bed.

The trouble comes when mom resumes her normal schedule. She may return to work and baby goes to daycare. Now the schedule can get a bit hectic. The housework that has been piling up for six weeks has to be dealt with. When baby cries, mom may be in the middle of cooking dinner or cleaning the bathroom. When there are other kids in the house, the pressure intensifies.

What happened to those six weeks of bliss? A mother can develop resentment towards her newborn or the other children in the house. Husbands are a particularly good target because they are often seen as shirking their duties at home for work. Perspective changes when motherhood begins.

Mothers are people too. They need quiet time, rest, time away, and help from others. To manage stress, mothers need to use every resource in their arsenal. This includes making schedules, lists, using services, and asking family to help.

A mother can’t deal with all of the aspects of motherhood without a network. This network can include parents, friends, services, spouse, and other children. Without their support, stress can reach dangerous levels. Part of being a good mom is learning when you need others to help you to be the best that you can be.
